Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are a kind of multi-hop, self-organized network systems using wireless communication. It usually consists of massive, miniature, cheap sensor nodes in a monitored region. WSN is reviewed as one of the top ten emerging technologies in the future by 《Technology Review》magazine of the US.802.15.4/ZigBee is a short-distance, low-power, low-cost wireless communication technology and it can be widely used for industrial control, intelligent home, military testing and other applications which request long periods of duty (several months or even years). It provides a new solution for the implementation of wireless sensor networks.802.15.4/ZigBee is one of the most promising technologies for wireless sensor networks. Energy consumption is a key aspect of the performance of wireless sensor networks. Focusing on the action of a single node, we first analyze the energy consumption of the coordinator, routers and end-devices respectively in the different stages of the network. Then the energy consumption models of the networking stage and the communicating state are built based on the actions of each node. Then the total energy consumption model for wireless sensor networks is obtained. After the establishment of the model, this paper focuses on the relationship between some important parameters and the energy consumption, such as the relationship between the communication radius and the network energy consumption. A Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based method is proposed to optimize the topology of the network for better energy consumption performance by equipping part of the sensor nodes with mobility. Several groups of experimental results are given to demonstrate the success of the proposed methods.
