Water environment consists of two parts, the surface water environment and the groundwater environment, which include rivers, lakes, reservoirs, oceans, swamps, glaciers, springs, shallow and deep groundwater. As China's rapid economic development, Water pollution and destruction has become more and more serious, and water environment monitoring is one of the most important means to administer the water resources and control the water pollution, which is playing an irreplaceable role in it. There are mainly four kinds of available water environment monitoring methods: 1) manual sampling, laboratory analysis 2) distributed automatic water monitoring system which consists of monitoring center and monitoring sub-stations 3) remote sensing 4) biological water monitoring. Because China has a vast waters, it is impossible to meet the continuos, dynamic, macro, and quick water monitoring by the existing monitoring stations and monitoring techniques, and also can not make water quality prediction timely and accurately. So, we need to develop a real-time, macro, accurate and dynamic water environment monitoring system, which can reflect the changes of the water environment much more fully and accurately to reduce the water pollution. As for the shortage of the existing water environment monitoring methods, in this paper, we apply the wireless sensor network technology into the water environment monitoring, and develop a data monitoring node of WSNs oriented water environment monitoring. This monitoring node can be used in a variety of complex waters, can be widely dis tribute in the under test waters, and can make a long-term, real-time and online monitoring of PH, DO and temperature of the waters. The nodes in the waters communicate with each other through the ZigBee protocol. The base station collects the water environment data from the nodes through ZigBee, and then, via GPRS technology transfers all these water environment data to the remote data center. The water environment monitoring system which is composed of these nodes has many good characteristics such as low cost, power consumption, easy to deploy, little influence on the water environment and flexible to variety of waters. The ZigBee technology make the monitoring network has many good features such as intelligent, low-power, short latency, large-capacity, high reliability and self-networking, which able to adapt to a variety of waters. This paper's main task is as follows: 1) research IEEE802.15.4 and ZigBee protocol, analyzes its composition and applies it into the monitoring node's development. 2) develop a data monitoring node of WSNs oriented water environment monitoring. This monitoring node use TI's 16-bit low-power microcontroller MSP430F1611 as its core processor. Combining with the scalable multi-input water quality parameters transmitters and the ZigBee-based CC2430 wireless communication module, the monitoring node can monitor the PH, DO and temperature of the water on-line.After the design of the node's hardware and software, we test the node's capability of wireless communication, data acquisition and processing, and the command group smoothly. Though the analysis of the test results, we find that the water monitoring system can acquiring, processing and transferring the water environment parameters successfully, the performance of the system meet the design requirements and the pratical application requirements. The hardware and software design are reasonable and expansibility, and the monitoring system is running stable and reliable.
