Since2003, Beijing Unicom has bad a rapid development on ADSL broadband services. On the one hand the number of broadband subscribers is growing rapidly, and on the other hand the access rate per subscriber is continuesly rising, with higher bandwidth requirement of various types of broadband value-added services Beijing Unicom has introduced nowadays. As the bandwidth demand of value-added services increases, DSL technology with copper wire continues to show its shortcomings and the "last mile" bandwidth bottleneck gradually reveals, and thus broadband access has become a main trend in the development of the access network. With the development of broadband access services and broadband value-added services, new requirements of broadband access network planning and construction has proposed to Beijing Unicom, in the need of a sustainable and advanced technology to solve those problems.This study researches into PON technology in depth, reviews the standardization and evolution of PON technology, focuses on how EPON technology works, and finally compares it to other existing access technologies from operation modes and maintenance advantages. Combined with the development process of Beijing Unicom broadband access network and according to the multi-service model of development modes and planning objectives, the author has raised the necessary for broadband access networks based on PON technology. By introducing the theoretical knowledge and speeding-up requirements from Beijing Municipal Government and Beijing Unicom, the paper analyzes the feasibility of a variety of network applications models, describes principles and methods of PON broadband access network construction to support the services and equipment deployment. In the final part, the author details the practical applications by using his actual case projects on the PON technology.
