The virtual scene roaming technology is an important branch of Virtual Reality, which hascharacteristics of imagination, immersion and interaction. These3I characteristics give virtual sceneroaming technology a significant advantage over text, still images and animation. The virtual sceneroaming technology is widely used in tourism, architecture, game, medicine, aviation and so on. Virtualcampus roaming system is an application of virtual scene roaming technology in campus construction.Fictitious campus could show the realistic3D environments and educational administration information ofuniversity, supporting remote access through the network. So the fictitious campus plays an important rolein external publicity, management of teaching resource and design of campus environment, which will bean important part of digital campus.Constructing a virtual campus roaming system consists of two aspects: construct3D models andgenerate roaming system. The author studied virtual scene roaming and3-dimension modeling technologyby reviewing relevant literatures at home and abroad. The scene models are simulation and representationof objects in real environment, which is the foundation of roaming system. The effect of models directlyinfluences the realism of roaming system. After constructing the models, we need scene driving beforeusers can roam in the virtual scene and interact with the scene. Collision detection is one of the core issuesof the scene roaming. The key technology of collision detection is to avoid interference between objects invirtual environments. The efficiency of the collision detection algorithm has a major effect on the realityperformances of the virtual scene roaming. The main works in the implementation of the virtual campusroaming system are as follows:1. Studied virtual scene modeling technology and analyzed different kinds of virtual scene modelingmethods, confirming the main realization approach. We used MultiGen Creator and3dsMax to constructand optimize the buildings, trees and terrain models of campus, integrated these models and realized thevirtual campus scene finally.2. Single bounding volume is deficient in real-time and accuracy during the collision detection. Tosolve this problem, this paper presented a collision detection optimization algorithm based on hybridbounding volumes. The algorithm combines the simplicity of AABB-AABB overlap test with the tightness of k-DOPs. Experiment results show that the algorithm above is efficient in improving the real-time ofcollision detecting.3. Studied the key technologies of virtual scene roaming in VR-Platform and generated the virtualcampus roaming system with it. The system has a better visual effect and interactivity after testing.
