Wireless sensor networks is a new technology converged information processing technology, sensor technology, wireless communication technology and other emerging technologies. ZigBee technology has the features of low power consumption, low data rate, low cost, complexity of network topology and scalability which just meet the requirements of wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensor networks and ZigBee technology as well as its application in the field of rail temperature monitoring is studied in this paper. And the ZigBee wireless rail temperature monitoring node and energy management is designed.According to the actual needs of the rail temperature monitoring, the rail temperature monitoring node based on ZigBee communication module JN5139. The hardware design of the node communication unit, the sensing unit, the data processing unit and the power supply unit is finished. The software design of the ZigBee rail temperature monitoring node is completed by searching the ZigBee protocol stack and JENOS operating system. To solve the timing and positioning problem of rail temperature monitoring node, the timing and positioning information function of the rail temperature monitoring node is designed. In order to test the node, the host computer program based on Visual C++6.0is designed.Energy management has been one of the core issues of wireless sensor network design. In order to extend the life of the ZigBee wireless sensor network nodes, the node energy management strategy is designed from the aspect of both hardware design suitable for the rail temperature monitoring application environment and software design in the ZigBee protocol stack. Meanwhile, the node also monitors power consumption of lead-acid batteries in real time to manage ZigBee sensor node energy.In addition, the factors that affect the communication of ZigBee node is researched in combination of the radio wave propagation characteristic. And the transmission distance and packet loss rate of the node is tested.
