In recent years, short of water resource is getting worse, more and more countries pay more attention on the high effectively use of water resource. As a big agriculture country, the total amount of water resource in China is ahead of other countries, but when it comes to personal possession of water resource; it's only 1/4 of the world's average that is China is one of the 13 countries that have the least water resource. In spite of this, the waste of water is still severe. In China, about 80% of water is used in agriculture in a less effective way. So, it's important for China to change the traditional way and develop the precise agriculture in order to know exactly the condition of soil, which makes the watering in proper time and proper amounts possible.In the monitoring of a huge area, wireless sensor network has a good advantage. Compared with traditional wire communication, wireless sensor network not only could save the cost, it also won't affect the operation of agriculture. With numbers of nodes in the area, it can easily acquire the wanted information and send it to the observer wirelessly. ZigBee technology has a wider use in the low-data-rate, low-cost and low power consumption area, and what's more it works at 2.4GHz frequency. So it's applicable in the soil moisture monitoring. The design of soil moisture collection node is based on ZigBee technology.In the beginning, the concept and character of wireless sensor network is introduced, then the researching status of wireless sensor network in agriculture throughout the world. Several common wireless sensor network technologies are compared here. ZigBee protocol is analyzed in detail, including network topology, stack architecture. Hardware of the node is discussed in chapter 3, including the sensor, the micro control unit, the wireless transceiver etc. The software in the node is described in chapter 4, also the IDE, compiler and debugger.Jennic EK000 is used as the hardware develop environment, it mainly provides the peripheral device extension, such as pins, power supply etc. JN5139 M0 provides the MCU, wireless transceiver and ADC. Open source develop tool CODE: BLOCKS is used here, it can integrate the GCC compiler and GDB debugger. With flash programmer, the program can be downloaded to the destination board. The designed nodes can form a mesh network, collect correctly data and transfer them.
