FOD(Foreign object Debris),which refers to some foreign substances beingunsafe for the flying aircrafts such as stone、small parts falling from the testedaircrafts、bullets, often called runway foreign body. It is necessary to detect theFOD quickly and accurately for the safety of the aircrafts. Currently, there aresuccessful examples of FOD detection system overseas, mainly through themillimeter-wave radar and image technology to identify and detect the FOD, but itis not widely applicated. Domestic runway monitoring still relies on human,watching the FOD, which reduce the flow of aircraft flying and non-real-timemonitoring, so there are security risks.FOD detection system for airport runway uses the modernequipment for video monitoring,contrasts the current images achieved by theacquisition system with the image template updated in real time, identifies the FODquickly. This method is fast, simple and efficient. Based on the researchbackground, the article studies two key components of the FOD detection systemfor airport runway which is image synchronous collection and processing.Image synchronous collection collects a series of regular images neededusing collection equipment which is composed of Holder、Vidicon and Rack etc. Inthe article using the microcontroller of ATmega64controls the rotating of theHolder, judging the angle of Holder rotated controls the Vidicon, then we have aseries of pictures.After repeated tests, contrast, adjustment the program of themicrocontroller, we ultimately designed a set of algorithm which can achieve theindicators, real-time and effective images、Holder rotated smoothly and steadily.Image processing requires to identify the differences of the images collected andthe template within the error range. In the article using the C++Builder compilesthe images, through researching a variety of segmentation, matching algorithm, weachieve the requirements of the paper expectedly.This article finishes the research of image synchronous collection of the FODdetection system and image preprocessing module. The main job is shown asfollowing: Using the microcontroller of ATmega64controls the rotating of the Holder.Test the controlling programs repeated in order to match the current images to theimage templates latter; For the special environment of the airport runway, this articleprepares a variety of image recognition algorithms, and gets an optimal image recognition algorithm ultimately by comparing them repeatedly; Based on C++Builder6platform, developing an image processing module with C++language, theexperimental results reaches the function of the FOD detection and localization.
