Since the1970s, image fusion has become a research focus in the world. Image fusion technology makes taking advantage of multi-source images and multi-band images’ complementary become a reality. Infrared and visible image fusion technology is one of the research focuses in image fusion technology field. The fusion image can show the information of the scene more accurately, comprehensive and much better for further image process and analysis. Image fusion technology has a wide range of application in military, civil and industrial field.This paper studies the real-time image fusion algorithms which suitable for FPGA. Though image fusion algorithms’ calculation is large, FPGA can meet the real-time requirements of the algorithms when the power consumption is low. This paper analyzed the image fusion theory, introduced various image fusion algorithms suitable for FPGA platform and then proposed the methods of using DSP Builder to build image fusion algorithm function module. Take advantages of DSP Builder’s Short development cycle, Simple operation, strongly code portability to reduce the difficulty of design image fusion algorithms in FPGA hardware. Research the real-time Laplace fusion algorithm and FABEMD fusion algorithm in FPGA. Design the FPGA-based miniaturized infrared and visible image fusion system circuit, complete image gray preprocessing algorithm, image scaling algorithm and morphological image fusion algorithm. In addition, design en environment experiment to test the algorithms and analysis the data. The experiment results show that the fusion algorithm can run well in the system circuit and real-time display the image.
