With the development of science and technology, people’s business needs for the network becomes more and more diversified which has developed from simple voice calls business into a collection of voice, video, broadband and other aspects of the business. These new data and multimedia services make increasing demand for bandwidth. At the same time, the user count of the access network is rapidly increasing, which makes it difficult to adapt to the current requirements with the existing SDH/MSTP networks. In some areas, the existing network bandwidth is showing saturation. Therefore, people began to consider other technologies to solve the problem, which caused people to think for the next generation networks.The next-generation network is a packet-based network transmission technology, which provides carrier-class services, and can use more bandwidth, and ensure high quality of service (QoS). As a packet-based network technology, PTN has been widely used in the present networking solutions. PTN is a next generation transport network, which not only keeps the advantages of the traditional network technologies, but also increases the packet service choices and can be dynamically controlled flexibly. It can not only meet the gap between the existing business requirements and the shortens of transport network resources, but also provides a good support for the present3G services and prepares the way for future LTE business.In this paper, the author introduces the basic knowledge of PTN technology in detail, such as its several forms and key technologies at first. Then, the building patterns and principles of PTN technology which are used in the transmission network are analyzed. Finally, according to the actual network conditions in a certain city, applying PTN technology, the connection method on access convergence layer and access layer, a complete network solution is proposed.
