Information technology has already brought huge and innovative changes in manufacturing and electronics industry, while the application in construction industry is still at very low level. With the development of social civilization, the importance of low energy consuming, low pollution and sustainable development is growing, meanwhile, Chinese construction enterprises are faced with increasingly fierce competition and challenges. Therefore, information technology should be extensively applied in Chinese construction industry. As a special construction, the bridge engineering should also take full advantage of information technology to improve production efficiency and economic efficiency. There are four main sections in this research showing the study of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in bridge engineering:Firstly, both features of BIM according to the definition of BIM and summaries on the software of BIM have been introduced, with the studies development of BIM in the world.Secondly, combining with the characteristics of BIM, the application and advantages of BIM in the stages of the program design, construction and operation have been studied. And framework of BIM-based Bridge Engineering cycle management has been put up.Thirdly, the application of BIM in designing Zhushui Footbridge has been studied.Fourthly, as information management of structural safety is the core of bridge management, Edong Changjiang River Bridge is employed as an example, application of BIM on information management of structural safety has been conducted, hoping finding new ideas for the establishment of information management of bridge structural safety. Finally, the author focuses on the challenges that application of BIM on wide extant facing on and the potential of BIM in the future, aiming to provide some inspiration and reference to industry colleagues.
