With the rapid development of optical communication technology and the rapidincrease in telecom operators of our country, the backbone network has been a higher-levelnetwork for optical fiber communication. However, the bottleneck between high-speed LANand the backbone network still exists. That is the ’last mile’ access network. The new demandwith high bandwidth as the main feature has opened up broad prospects for the application ofFiber-to-the-x (FTTx)technologies. Then, FTTx technologies will get great progress inChina.Passive optical network (PON) technology can meet the demand for access networkconstruction. The main advantages include passivity, no need to supply pressure, adaptabilityto ODN environment, no interference of electromagnetic lightning, and low costs of roomconstruction and operation maintenance. Especially,. EPON and GPON technologies withthe fearture of low cost, long life, long transmission distance and high bandwidth have beenimportant way for a new generation of optical access network construction.As the hot spots of optical communication technology, PON technology andapplication has get the rapid development. Moreover, Fiber to the home (FTTH) is proposedas the best solutions in the field of broadband access, and has entered large-scale applicationstage. Jiangsu Telecom has devoted into the PON construction and experiments. The authorhad the honor to participate in the corresponding design projects and construction work.Then this paper is one of the outcomes of the project.PON-based FTTH is a continuous exploration direction of access network construction.But FTTH technology still is in its infancy in our country. In the application of keytechnologies and standards of the project, there are some bias in the design and construction.Considering the principle of PON, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the superiority ofthe various PON technologies in technology and product maturity. Then the design of theaccess network based on PON for FTTH Fiber is discussed. Meanwhile, the study of thefeasibility of the technical implementation and the conclusion are given. Combined with theaccess scenarios of Jiangsu Telecom including residential quarters, villas,commercial-intensive areas, villages, the EPON network is designed. The concrete designs include the following elements: network topology, network options, device configuration,device testing and evaluation, the level of light and two light performance comparison, thechoice of OLT room, port expansion and upgrade, and the economic rationality of theconstruction. The idea and methods of design EPON network in FTTH Fiber is discussed.Under the conditions of the basic principles of network construction, the communicationperformance indicators is meet, and design scheme has as much as possible representative.Meanwhile, a standardized design model, which can unify design and design ideas, improvedesign efficiency and save the significance of the feasibility of engineering investmentreality, is provided as a reference for future design work.
