Information is the basis of people to action in the information age. How to correctly identifythe authenticity of information and effectively obtain the useful information is not only theproblem of the specialized personnel but also each community resident in daily life must face.Information literacy is a kind of comprehensive ability for information which consists ofunderstanding information system, judging when you will need information, choosing the bestchannel to get information, the retrieval evaluation and the effective use of the information. Thecommunity residents’information literacy level directly influences the quality of their lives.In order to understand whether the community residents need information literacy education,we conduct an investigation of the status of community residents’information literacy in theLixia District in Jinan. Through the investigation we found that information literacy education isvery necessary for community residents. First, people that participate in community activities are50 to 60-year-old men and women who never had an information literacy education. Second,these elderly people mostly know that using information technology can do so many things by allmeans. Third, the way that community residents can learn information technology is very limited,because their children have no time or no patience to teach them and the special traininginstitutions in society can’t appropriate for them. Hence, the contradiction exists between most ofthe community residents’low information literacy level and their demand is very big. This canbe solved by starting information literacy education.I make a detailed training program to cultivate the information literacy of communityresidents which is based on the previous investigation and combined with the actual conditions.The training program includes four parts: first is the training contents, which contains the maincontent of the curriculum and with basic theoretical knowledge and practical operating mainly;second is the training goal, which points out the specific direction of the cultivation ofinformation literacy for the community residents and it is also the ruler of the communityresidents’information literacy level; third is the training mechanism, which includes some usefulstrategies for the cultivation of community residents’information literacy and mainly includes the management system, funding source and teacher resources; the last one is the training form,which elaborates various teaching form including the traditional teaching mode, groupcollaboration, individual coaching and the open classroom.Then I chose a community in the Lixia District to put the training program into practices.Through the practice we find that though there are large differences in the community residents’learning starting point and reception, it is quite feasible to conduct the information literacyeducation among community residents as long as we make a possible arrangement. Theinformation literacy education also can improve the quality of their life.At present the information literacy education study for elderly residents is not so much interms of both practice and theory. So the cultivation of information literacy among communityresidents itself is a novel research perspective. The training program that was made on the basisof the current study at home and abroad and combined with the actual conditions of the region isthe biggest innovation of this study.
