Because of the unique properties of distributed fiber optic sensors, such as passive detection, long distance and large range of distributed measurement, electromagnetic interference immunity, distributed fiber sensor systems have been more and more widely applied in power, water conservancy, civil engineering, military, oil and gas transmission and other fields. However, these applications are separately managed, that causes inconvenience for unified management. Intelligence and networking are the future trend of sensor systems. Therefore, the study of network management of distributed fiber optical sensing system is very important. This paper is based on the Distributed Fiber Sensor System project, which is jointly developed by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Suzhou SengSing Optical Fiber Sensor Technology Co., Ltd. Combined with the author’s contribution in the project and the latest research results around the world, this paper designed the parts of network communications and network management of Distributed Fiber Sensor System.Four architectures of network management which are centralized, distributed, hierarchical and web architectures are analyzed and an integrated architecture is designed in this paper. The new architecture is designed to use the advantages of the four different architectures. The new architecture is divided into three layers of user layer, management layer and sensor layer. The user layer focuses on the design and implementation of the client. The management layer includes the control module, SNMP management module using thread pool technology, server module using SELECT technology and database of management layer. The sensor layer highlights the MIB design in SNMP agent, sensor control module and the database of sensor layer. Finally, the paper is summarized and further research directions are proposed.
