Topology discovery is one of key technologies in network management. Accurately finding the topology of a network is a basic function of topology discovery. Topology discovery is the prerequisites to achieve many of the key network management tasks.Because of the diversity of network protocol and complexity of the network, to discovery all the devices in the network completely and accurately becomes very difficult, topology discovery becomes one of difficulty in network management. Therefore, studying on fast and efficient methods in network topology discovery has important significance. SNMP-based network topology discovery is the most mainstream of the topology discovery technologies. Currently, many network equipment providers support SNMP protocol in their network devices. In this paper, we focus on studying fast and efficient network topology discovery algorithm, which is based on SNMP protocol and TWaver. The principal works are as following:1) For the topology discovery of router node in network layer. We proposed a SNMP-based topology discovery algorithm at network layer. It construct and analyses the MIB model of each node firstly, then find the topology of entire network by BFS and layer by layer until we get the SNMP edge node. Finally, we built the topology assumption diagram of network layer. Experiments showed that the algorithm can get the topology of network layer accurately.2) To discover the subnet topology, a subnet topology discovery algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm firstly obtains the IP set for all the activate host from the table of MIB. Then, the algorithm checks whether the hosts are in activity using ICMP and Ping. Lastly, the topology architecture of subnet is constructed from the information obtained. Experimental results indicate that the algorithm could build the topology architecture of every subnet efficiently.3) Based on the algorithms for discovering network layer and subnet layer, we design and implement a network topology discovery system using Java and Twaver platform.
