The Controller Area Network, which is also called CAN, was successfully inventedand developed by the Bosch Company in the 1980s. After more than 20 years ofexperienced development and improvement, it has already become one of the mostpopular vehicle networks, and it is has been proved to be outstanding reliability andpracticality. However, the current International Organization for Standardization (alsocalled ISO) CAN standard only defies the related contents in the layer of physical and datalink; it does not defy target on the very specific contents of application layer which inreturn causes a big problem for most big automobile factories and some scientific researchinstitutions to develop their own application layer protocols, the protocols come from theirresearch findings cannot be compatible with each other’s results . That problem preventsthe further standard theory development and practical application of CAN in several layers. As a result, the research of the CAN application layer theory has important theoretic valueand realistic significance. The core of this project is to analysis the communication process of CAN Bus system. This paper based on the latest ISO CAN 2.0B standard as the fundamental standard andSAE J1939 protocol, adopts the modern embedded system as implementation to designone new vehicle CAN communication system that fits to most current large bus whichcould replace the traditional point-to-point network. This project also designs the hardwareof the control module and the software inside. The new vehicle network could make all thecommunication on the bus by CAN. At the same time, to improve the efficiency of thedevelopment process, we design and build one new test platform by LABVIEW andassociated engineering control card. The new test platform could send and receive CANbus signals by automatic or manual and those signals match the requirements of ISOstandard and SAE J1939. It also can receive information from the control module and savethem. After real test, the platform proved to be steady and reliable.
