The Development Of Virtual Research And Development System And Management

With the rapid growth of China’s economic, more and more multinational companies start to invest in China. Aiming at not only the China market, but also the large talent pool of Chinese engineers, setting up research and development centers became the new wave of these multinational companies’investment in China. R&D is the core competitiveness of such companies, how to protect the information assets and secure the intellectual property is a vital topic.To keep a high level of information security and prevent intellectual property leakage, we developed a Controlled Development Environment for the engineers in Shanghai R&D center. The system is composed of three major components proxy, provisioning interface and monitoring interface. User’s access rights are maintained by proxy software based on pre-defined security policies. The other two components provide the scalability to manage and monitor large amount of resources needed for the R&D team. We partitioned all the source code based on policy control and make sure the developer only sees what’s needed to do the job. We also developed a full set of security policies for the R&D center, such as business unit security officer policy and mandatory user security awareness training.Information security of an organization is an extreme sensitive and touchy subject. The policy of dealing with information security is often controversial. How to balance security and productivity is always a big argument. Our virtual development environment considered the requirements from both sides at the initial design phase. The system mitigated the most critical security risks in our R&D center and still kept the engineering community productive. Although it is impossible to solve all the problems with one system, we are moving toward the goal steadily.
