Zhang Pei-lun is one of the most important members of the early Ch’ing-liu partisansin the late Qing dynasty, who was dismissed and sent to exile for disastrous defeat in battleof Majiang River during the Sina-French war,and therfore his official career was over.Although in his old age,he was nominated as Staff officer to sign Boxer Protocol togetherwith Li Hong-zhang, his father-in-law,it is just like an episode or an echo in his whole life. From the founding of Republic of China, the records and disputes on him are beingincreased, but some of them are full of errors or distortions. Related papers are alsogradully increased especially in the latest three decades, but they are in general on hispolitical career as a member of Ch’ing-liu partisans. Therefore, this thesis try to make some breakthrough, rejecting the wrong records andaccordingly rectifying and restoring some important historical facts by inter-verificationbetween poems and history records. In the style, It is different from either the chronicle orthe taxonomy researches;it is unfolded with space-time interweaving. As a result, some ofthe chapters and sections may seem unexpected or disorderly, but on the whole it iscoherent. The reasearch mainly consists of Zhang Pei-lun’s family origins, the campaign of hisearly life, the relationship between Li Hong-zhang and him, and the life and the fate afterhe was sent to exile. Although his political life as a member of Ch’ing-liu partisans nearlyten years is rather significant,I cannot but sketch out it with extremely simple wordsbecause of the limited length. So, the title is just expedient. The terminal of this disquisitionis the Textual Research of Zhang Pei-lun’s Works, which I hope could help readers torealize and appreciate his scholarship, talent and passion.
