BackgroundWith the development of the society and the acceleration of life pace, the incidence rate of Cervical Vertigo has become higher and higher, receiving more and more attention by the medical community and the public. Despite its seriousness in threatening people’s physical and psychological health, most people have no effective way to prevent its occurrences. Even though people may be conscious about this disease, due to their inadequate attention and the lack of effective treatment, it is a common phenomenon that the problems still gradually become more severe and difficult to be cured.According to the modern medicine, cervical vertigo, also known as vertebral artery compression (or ischemia) syndrome, is defined as the vertigo syndrome caused by the vertebral and basilar artery blood supply disorder, whose occurrence results from cervical diseases of the extracranial section of vertebral artery. This syndrome easily develops from cervical spondylosis. Statistics have shown that nowadays with the increasing work pressure and the rising intensity of work load, cervical spondylosis has become a very common disease; and over half of the cervical spondylosis patients are found to suffer from cervical vertigo. Therefore, it is of great significance to find a treatment method that is highly pertinent to and has obvious curative effect on cervical vertigo.Tuina of traditional Chinese medicine has so far been the preferred treatment method of cervical spondylosis, and its curative effect has also been confirmed by the clinical practice. Manipulation treatment can effectively release the pressure, restitute dislocation, repair tendon, promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis. It can also readjust the mechanical balance of the neck and the vertebra, and lessen the obstruction and oppression symptom of the nerve vessels, eventually restoring the brain’s blood supply. In this way, manipulation promotes the treatment of cervical vertigo. As one type of the head and facial manipulation, the integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing is frequently used in the treatment of cervical vertigo in clinical practice. In spite of the excellent curative effect, its mechanism has not yet been made clear. It is critical to test the effect of the integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing and understand its mechanism since it will make us more specific and precise when selecting treatment scheme for individual cases.ObjectiveThis research aims to observe the effect and the importance of treating cervical vertigo by means of the integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing. Besides, through the observation of any changing symptoms before and after using the integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing to treat cervical vertigo, and the observation of the speed of brain blood flow, and the evaluation of the cervical vertigo symptoms and functions and general improvement, a preliminarily research into the impact and mechanism of the manipulation on cervical vertigo treatment is conducted, so that we can further understand the application significance of integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing in clinic.MethodsIn this research, we collected75cases which measure up from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and Guangdong Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. We divided them into three groups as A, B and C at random in order to make comparative studies. Group A was considered as a basic treatment group, and was treated on the neck; Group B was considered as moxibustion in Baihui point group, and was treated on the neck with a moxibustion in Baihui point; Group C was considered as frontal scrubbing group, and was treated on the neck plus using integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing. Every group took two courses of treatment. Every kind of clinical statistics needed was collected before and after experiments, such as vertigo and vomiting situation, TCI) and the evaluation of cervical vertigo symptoms and functions, and so forth. Our database was established by using SPSS17.0to input, manage and statistically analyze all the data in the computer. In this way, the function of relevant software, the double entry by two people and the sampling inspection can insure the accuracy of the data entry. One-way ANOVA was used for group comparison, Chi-square test for categorical variable data, rank sum test for the numerical variable data of the nonnormal distribution. All the statistics above were analyzed in SPSS17.0.ResultsAfter statistics analysis, we found that there was no marked difference in Patients’ age, gender and course of the disease in the three groups (P>0.05), and the data was comparable. There was great improvement in symptoms changed, the speed of brain blood flow, the evaluation of cervical vertigo symptoms and functions and general improvement after treatment. Comparing three groups after2courses’ treatment, there was not marked difference in TCD (P>0.05), but on symptoms changed, the evaluation of cervical vertigo symptoms and functions and general improvement, the effect in Group B and Group C were better than Group A, and the difference was marked (P<0.05), and there was not marked difference between Group B and Group C (P>0.05).ConclusionsThe integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing is able to improve blood supply in the brain and blood circulation in the head and the face. Its effect in refreshing consciousness and relieving fainting is remarkable. Therefore, the integrative manipulation of frontal scrubbing is highly worthy of popularizing in clinic because of its curative effect in treating cervical vertigo, and this integrative manipulation needs to be deeply studied on systemic operation method, adapted population and quantitative criterion.
