ObjectivesTo evaluate the effect of acupuncture in preventing and treating nausea and vomiting which results from breast cancer chemotherapy, and to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the curative action of acupuncture.MethodsThis research design was Clinical stochastic control experiment.64patients were randomly divided into treatment group and control group. All the patients were received chemotherapy for breast cancer. The patients in the treatment group were received granisetron combined with acupuncture, whereas the patients in the control group were received granisetron injection. The symptoms of nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite within the first7days of hemotherapy cycle were observed and graded, according to WHO anti-cancer drug toxicity (nausea, vomiting) classification. Adverse reactions were recorded, and the Karnofsky score for general status were calculated. The data were analyzed by Chi-square test and Student’s t-test using Spssl7.0statistical software. P-values<0.05were considered significant difference.Results(1) The Nausea:comparison of two chemotherapy treatment on day1complete control rate of nausea, Chi-square test showed P>0.05. From2to7days, Chi-square test showed P<0.05, there were significant differences between the two groups. Comparing the two groups with the duration of nausea by t test, The results showed that P<0.05.(2)The Vomit:Antiemetic treatment group and control group, the total effective rate were93.7%,90.6%on day1after chemotherapy, there were no significant (P>0.05) difference between them. From2days after chemotherapy, the anti-delayed emesis efficiency of the treatment group was significantly (P<0.01) higher than that of the control group.(3) The appetite:Comparison of two appetite after chemotherapy to improve the situation,by chi-square test results, P<0.05.ConclusionAcupuncture combined with antiemetic drug could effectively decrease nausea, delayed vomiting, and poor appetite resulted from breast cancer chemotherapy. Thus, it improved the quality of life of patients. Furthermore, clinical studies need to be do in further larger sample, multi-center randomized studv.
