Objective:To investigate the influence of the type of malocclusion on the symptoms oftempommandibular disorder(TMD)with objective quantitative analysis of thesymptoms of TMD in patients with different skeletal classes of malocclusion. Toobserve whether the splint could help relieve the symptoms of TMD in clinic patientswith malocclusion.Metheods:76clinic patients with malocclusion were divided into3groups according to theskeletal Class to treat and compare the craniomandibular index(CMI)of differentgroups.41subjects with Malocclusion and symptoms of TMD were treated withsplint. CMI which were recorded and compared before and after therapy, was used toassess the clinical improvement after accepting a treatment of splint.Results:(1) The comparisons among the three groups revealed significantly largerDysfunction Index (DI) and CMI in skeletal Class III when compared with skeletalClass I. There are not statistical different between skeletal Class I when comparedwith skeletal Class II. There are also not statistical different between skeletal Class IIand skeletal Class III.(2) CMI and DI was significantly decreased after the treatment of splint in41subjects.(P <0.001) Conclusions:The type of malocclusion could, to a certain extent, influence the severity of thesymptoms of TMD. The symptoms of TMD are more serious in skeletal Class IIIwhich compared with skeletal Class I. The treatment of splint could help relieve thesymptoms of TMD in clinic patients with malocclusion.
