| Objective:It was planed to investigate the effects of relaxation splint on clinical symptoms and masticatory muscle electrical activity of bruxers.Methods:8 cases were chosen from the patients whose chief complaints were tooth-grinding during the night.Relaxation splint was used for the clinical treatment. The clinical effects of this conservative treatment were observed.Electromyogram (EMG) machine was used to record the electrical activity of bilateral masseter muscle(MM) and anterior temporalis(TA) at beginning and 3 months later.Results:1.3 months later,6 cases' clinical symptoms improved.7 cases' Molina score declined. It was proved that the treatment with relaxation splint was effective.2.With the insertion of relaxation splint, most of the patients' TA and MM electrical activity at biting was significantly reduced immediately(P<0.05 ).After the treatment, the MPP electrical activity was significantly reduced(P<0.05),but there were no significantly changes found at ICP(P>0.05).There were no significantly changes found at masticatory muscle total asymmetry(Astot),anterior temporalis asymmetry(ASTA) and masseter muscle asymmetry(ASMM) (P>0.05). Conclusions:1.The occlusal factor could lead to the occurence of bruxism.2.The occlusal therapy with relaxation splint was effective. It could creat a temporary change in vertical distance and stretch masticatory muscle by opening the occlusion. The EMG results proved that the relaxation splint could relax the masticatory muscle and reduce muscle tension.By statistical analysis,we found that the effects of this conservative treatment were moderate and temporary. So it was difficult to change the muscle status in a short period and the results might not last for a long time.3.The EMG could objectively react the exact functional condition of bilateral masticatory muscle. The EMG examination could guide the clinical treatment of bruxers. |
