Some authors suggested that severe TMJ lesions were degenerations of TMJ themselves and the surgery should be choosen as the main treatment .Others considered them as functional disorders, excepting some specific TMJ diseases such as tumors and rheumatic arthritis. The aim of treatment should be focused on the recovery of craniomandibular function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the severe TMJ lesions and occlusal parameters and masticatory muscle function, and the effect of functional treatmgnt.
