The early architectures of Hunan University are known as the9well-preservedarchitectures surrounding Yuelu Academy. They are the No.2Department, the ScienceHall, the Engineering Building, the Auditorium, the old library, Shengli Zhai,Students’ no.1, no.7and no.9dormitory.Under the effort of Professor Liu Su, these early architectures successfullyreceived the honor of being listed in the7th Batch of Important Heritage Site UnderState Protection by the name Hunan University Early Architecture Group. Theauthor assisted Professor Liu with the whole assignment. With knowledge fromexisting studies, the paper presented some new ideas on the style, the culturalconnotation, backgrounds and the designers of the early architecture group.The architecture style is studied: connotation of the Eclecticism architectureNo.2Department is surveyed under the view of both traditional Chinese officialarchitectures and classical Western architectures and also explored the designingmethods of its designer, Mr. Liu Dunzhen. This study redefined the western classicismand the early modernism components of the Science Hall, and refers it as a historicalarchitecture that hovers between classic and modern. Expressionism designing methodappeared only in details of the Engineering Building, an Art-Deco style is moreobvious from the integral. The succession of the ancient academy is a key link for theintegral research on the early architecture group of the Auditorium, the old library andYuelu Academy. And by studying the functional arrangement of the plane of no.1,no.7, no.9and Shengli Zhai, as well as the exert of small space courtyard and theunique techniques of the elevation, the paper discusses Mr. Liu Shiying’s designingphilosophy on dormitory buildings.The extension of architecture philosophy is also discussed: analysis of thecomplexity and the contradictoriness appeared in the early architectures are processedvia studies on the internal and external factors, which mainly refers to the influence ofMr. Liu Shiying’s childhood and his experience in Japan and the campus environmentas well as the political situation of that time. Under the instructions of earlyarchitecture philosophy,by reacquainting the architectural concepts behind modernism,post-modernism and even after that, the paper raised new viewpoints. The conclusionof Mr. Liu Shiying is modern China’s most radical modernism architect is made after comparing his architecture idea with the others within in the nation.In the end, the paper compared Hunan University with other academies that holdsimilar characteristics, such as Zhejiang University, the former missionary school andothers that are also listed as Important Heritage Site Under State Protection.
