This essay is based on a distinguishing culture of typical border town in the west ofHuNan province. By the he research of a characteristic of fenghuang, a historicaltown in HuNan province, then reaching a conclusion about specific principles ofprotection, which is agree with the development of the small town.The west area of HuNan province has its own special traditional culture, so historicaltowns have their distinguish features. Moreover , by the analysis of contradictionbetween protecting and development,the author propose organic principles ofprotection for this old town. The matters of organic principles are integral principle,developing principle, display principle, and principle of emphasis.Furthermore, by the foundation of organic principles, the papers illustrate how tocarry out the concrete work of protection. The author emphasize that protections ofappearances are not enough. It's also important to protect inhabitant activity andhistorical space in fenghuang. Simultaneously, city morphology and architecturetypology are used as auxiliary in the analysis about constitution of space.
