Nowadays, with the continuous development of the society, the power system has undergone major changes.Electricity networks and electricity users are increasingly linked. Apart from this, governments attach more and more importance to environmental problems, a variety of new energy and renewable energy are be used.The smart grid has become an inevitable trend of the electricity network in the future. Smart meter is very important in smart grid. Smart meter is a kind of energy metering instrument with the following functions:energy metering, information storage and processing, network communications, real-time monitoring, automatic control and human-computer interaction.Firstly, the paper summarizes and analyzes the researches of nowadays’ smart meter, compares the advantages and disadvantages of the various design methods. Ultimately the functions and hardware architecture of smart meter are determined. This paper uses dedicated metering chip ADE7758for energy information collecting and measuring, uses i.MX27as center management chip. i.MX27acts as a host computer for ADE7758, reads the energy information in the registers of ADE7758for subsequent processing.Conversely, i.MX27is slave device for Meter reading system. When the meter reading system issues reading command, i.MX27should respond and establish communication with the meter reading system.Secondly, the paper makes a detailed design of the hardware and software of smart meter’s each functional module respectively by using modular design principle, Achieves following functions:energy data acquisition measurement and storage, also includes the communication and interaction in the management part.Finally, the paper debugs the smart meter which is finally completed designing. Debug results show that the smart meter which is designed in this paper can meet the original design requirements. The hardware architecture consisted of dedicated metering chip and Management chip is feasible. It will be used in the energy meter designs.
