Component Object Model (COM) has become the principle approach to developapplication software due to its reliability, cost-efficiency and simplicity. It has been widelyused in re-developing the modern GIS system and has seen remarkable benefits andaccomplishments. To meet the research needs presented in the Managing and Assessing Platform ofMonitored Geological Environment Information of the City Clusters in Central Henan, asystem sponsored by the Ministry of Land and Resources, and another study on the groundfissures and land subsidence in the Fen-Wei basin, also sponsored by the ministry, twocomponent libraries, ArcEngine and ArcGIS API for Flex, are employed in the currentresearch. With key technical issues in software development under the C/S and B/S modelsanalyzed and discussed respectively, the research is expected to solve the problems in theintegrated development of geological thematic GIS. Thus key issues in designing anddeveloping the management information system (MIS) under the C/S framework, like dataorganization and management and statistical and analytical expression, were first discussedand analyzed on the basis of the ArcEngine component library and the Visual Studio2008platform, followed by issues like cross domain, efficient map-browsing andcustomer-designed COM. The researcher then tested and verified the key technicalapplicability and reliability of COM in the integrated development of geological thematicsystem. In the end, based on two cases, the thesis comes to a general solution to thecomponent-based software development of geological thematic systems under C/S and B/Sframework and offers some thoughts to the development of other thematic systems forreference. The following are findings of the research:1) Using GIS system design tools to design overall frames and detailed modules willhelp to achieve cleaner construction goals, higher efficiency and better quality;2)Secure login, data editing, data query, data positioning, data statistical analysis and other specific technical issues that arose in the development of C/S system;3)Display and analyse issues in the WebGIS development, including the display of thedata positioning and data query, the data statistical analysis of a particular acreage, resident’stotal economic loss, the display of flash icons of the WebGIS and the display of a selectedarea, were solved through the independent module development.
