A new water quality monitoring system based ZigBee technology was designed to replace the traditional manual operation which is inconvenient, time-consuming and not able to get accurate real-time data. The system could monitor quality data of target water in real time. The operation is simple and convenient with lower cost. Especially when there are a lot of sites which need to be monitored, the advantages of the system are more obvious. It provides an effective method and means for the water quality automatic monitoring. This paper firstly introduced the background of the project, characteristics and structure of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), and the state of the art of the research on the WSNs. Then, ZigBee chip, antenna modules, sensors and other devices according to the requirement of the system were chosen, and the hardware systems of the coordinator node and sensor node were designed. Secondly, Z-Stack protocol stack was transplanted, the appropriate program was coded, and water quality monitoring control software at the terminal was designed. Furthermore, experiments were carried on to show its effectiveness and feasibility. Thirdly, an immune particle swarm optimization algorithm for solving different deterministic and random coverage problems of WSNs was designed, and the simulation results were given. The results verified the effectiveness of the algorithm. Finally, a new node location technology based on RSSI ranging and PSO algorithm is proposed. The simulation results showed its feasibility. This paper successfully transplanted Z-Stack protocol stack to the hardware platform, and developed a new automatic water quality monitoring system. It provides an effective solution in water quality monitoring, and has a great practical significance and economic value.
