The remote data acquisition system in the power distribution network has a very important position. In many distribution network, required to collect data in time, in order to keep abreast of the basic situation of field devices of distribution network, and then control the distribution network in real time. With the development of the data acquisition system for power distribution network which have more and more requirement of the communication technology. The traditional communication methods including power line carrier, microwave, optical and spread spectrum communications. Among them, power line carrier and spread spectrum communications can not ensure the accuracy for urban distribution network. The microwave and optical communications which need great prophase investment is more not suitable for the distribution network, too.The remote data acquisition system whose data transmission platform was consisted of general packet radio service (GPRS) combined with the tunnel transmission technique of virtual private network (VPN) was proposed and it also overcame all the communication mode's faults which are the high construction costs, serious data losses, low capacity of resisting disturbance and poor security have been analyzed.This paper describes the design of the data acquisition's hardware and software, the entire system including data acquisition terminal and control center system which are responsible for data acquisition and remote monitoring, and achieve the integration of data acquisition and monitoring. The data acquisition terminal use DSPIC30F6014A MCU as the CPU, using Altium Designer software design the peripheral circuit of data acquisition terminal and manufacture the prototype, and then compiling the program of MCU. Using VC++ programming language designs the monitoring center system and a number of experiments have been done which according to the accuracy of data acquisition and the accuracy of the data communications.The experiment results declare that the communication mode with GPRS and VPN can span an independent, secure and steady communication tunnel, which does not only realize the steady wireless communication between distributed RTU and monitoring center but also the reliability and security of the data transmission. The whole system can make the data acquisition and communication system for distribution network unattended, low costs and low maintenance costs combined with the edited software program on the host computer.
