Atmospheric environment is one important part of human survival's natural environment and also is the basic material base of the human development. Atmospheric pollutant mainly comes from the factory emissions which is compose of SO2, all kinds of nitrogen compounds. The waste was directly discharged by the factories or indirectly discharged into the atmosphere, which lead to great damage of atmosphere and harm of people's health. Therefore, it's very important for economy and society to build up air quality monitoring system.With the development of wireless sensor network technology, the paper adopts Zigbee technology to monitor the pollution gas real-time. This thesis mainly describes the background and significance of air quality monitoring, introducing wireless sensor network and Zigbee technology. Besides, it designs the hardware circuit and software of air quality monitoring system.In the whole design, the wireless transceiver module uses XBee-PRO DigiMesh 900 chip, using single chip microcomputer as control chip. Sensors and wireless transceiver module composed a sensor node. It put the getting data to process into serial data. Then, serial data will be sent to the gathering node through the wireless communication form which was a jump organization network. Of course, the gathering node is composing of wireless transceiver module, SCM and CP2200. The gathering node will send the receiving data to the control center through the Ethernet. Both of sensor node and gathering node adopt the same way of supply power by solar cells and lithium battery.Finally, making a test for X-CTU ZigBee module through the Digi company's wireless communication product testing software.The network simulation by NS2 turns out that the network is running well, the lower rate of packet loss, the smaller of delay time, which meet the demand of automatic monitoring system.
