The energy limitation of the sensor nodes which are the terminals of the wireless sensor networks is an important aspect in restricting the mass application of the WSN. In this paper, it analyzes some existing routing protocols succinctly, and then targets LEACH protocol as the research object in a detail. And then in accordance with the problem such as the establishments of the clustering group and selecting cluster head randomly, the paper raises an improving program LEACH_RACU: In the way of the clustering head selection, the first clustering still utilizes the way of LEACH, and after finishing the clustering head in the whole network, verify that the distance among the cluster heads is bigger than the radius of the optimal emission; And each node adds a timer basing on the residual energy ;The more residual energy the node has, the earlier the node will be the clustering head. During the establishment stage of the clustering, the clustering head broadcasts the messages using the optimal radius. After the establishment of clustering, sign the clustering group as to ensure the stability of the clustering; Afterwards, all the clustering head selection and data transmission are executed within the fixed clustering groups, and then transmit the information to the sink with multi-hop. At last we use OPNET to test and verify LEACH_RACH and LEACH protocol. The comparison results show that the network lifetime of LEACH_RACH protocol increases by nearly 15% than that of LEACH protocol.
