In the twenty-first century, modern information technologies such ascommunications, electronics and computer network, are increasingly changing the waypeople work, liv e and learn. "Informatization" has became the icon of modern world . Withthe improvement and popularization of university information technology, using moderninformation technology to reform the traditional teaching methods has became the key.Network teaching (E-learning, or digital learning) refers to web-based teaching andlearning process by means of computer, network and multimedia. Teachers use Internet toprepare lessons, publish coursewares, assign homework and answer questions; whilestudents use Internet to conduct online learning, hand in papers and participate in onlinetests. Online teaching is not restrained by space and time, therefore learner's enthusiasmcan be stimulated efficiently. They can take the initiative to discover and acquireknowledge, participate in discussions and share knowledge. As a combination of onlineteaching and traditional teaching, hybrid teaching model can take advantages of bothtraditional classroom teaching which favours promoting interaction between teachers andstudents, and network teaching which prefers the"student-centered"concept.However, commercial network teaching system makes a lot of education institutionsflinch due to its high price. Open source education software with its spirit of good quality,free, open source and sharing becomes the first choice of education institutions. Moodlewhich is based on social constructivism theory, is a Curriculum Management SystemCMS) developed by Australia teacher Martin Dougiamas. Since Moodle appears, it haswon the trust of its users, because of its completely free, open source, easy-to-useinterface and modular structure. Up to now, Moodle has been used in 210 countries, andsupports as many as 78 languages. Moodle is known as one of the state-of-the-art networkteaching system.Moodle has been widely used in universities in eastern china, however its researchand application in the western area is still rare. This thesis studies Moodle networkteaching system, and applies it to universities in Xinjiang. It is a meaningful experimentfor using Moodle in western universities.Firstly, it describes open source software, course management systems, hybrid teaching, and constructivist theory of knowledge. Then it provides an overview ofapplications of open source software in education, both home and abroad. It also presentsbasic knowledge about the features, functions and system management of Moodle system.Secondly, on the basis of thorough understanding of directory structure andinstallation method of Moodle system, we build an assistant teaching system based onLAMP+Moodle platform, present solutions to some problems appear after installingMoodle system, and expand its multimedia functions with Mediacenter and LinghtBoxgallery plug-ins.Thirdly, we apply Moodle to fundamental and elective courses of computer science.We post electronic courseware, laboratory guidance, and some extra learning materials tonetwork teaching platform. Also, we design interactive modules such as chat-room andforum, and conduct online tutor. Students can conduct online learning, group discussionand collaborative learning in their spare tim e. According to discussions with students, wefind that: through assistant teaching based on Moodle, we can share teaching resources,stimulate the students' interest in learning, increase opportunities of interaction betweenstudents and teachers, improve students' learning ability, as well as achieve better teachingresults.And finally, the thesis concludes this research, and discusses future work.
