The quality request of the electronic governing, an important part of diesel electric control technology, has became higher and higher. Since the parameters of the PID controller used in diesel engines cannot be adjusted online after determined in advance, and the parameters of different diesels are different. Thus, this paper proposes an adaptive control algorithm which can be applied to control the speed of diesel engines.Deep research has been done on the basic theory of the adaptive control based on numbers of domestic and overseas literatures about diesel electronic governing system. Furthermore, the feasibility of various adaptive control algorithms in diesel engine speed regulation has been compared and analysed. Eventually, the application of the model reference adaptive controller in diesel engine speed regulation control has been established.Based on the systematic study of the theory of model reference adaptive controller design, together with Lang Bell principle, a mathematical model of diesel has been established which follows the first-order delay and loaded by reducing equations of motion of diesel engine. Moreover, a mathematical model of actuator has been established by referring to current DC servo motor actuators. In addition, according to the theoretical basis of the model reference adaptive control algorithm, a mathematical model of the ideal reference model has been established. At last, establish the model reference adaptive controller mathematical expressions by using Lyapunov stability second method.By using MATLAB/Simulink software, the established mathematical model can be simulated, optimized, analysed and verified offline. Moreover, under conditions like start-up, different diesels, and changing of load and RMP, the adaptive controller control overshoot was less than that of the traditional PID controller. Therefore, the adaptive controller is superior in terms of control effect.In the end of this paper, a test platform has been built. By using German HEINZMANN simulator and the controller which based on 9s12 single-chip microcomputer as the hardware platform, programming the adaptive control algorithm with C language, the foundation for the test has been laid. The adaptive control algorithm in diesel engine speed control process of superiority has been proved by testing of startup, steady, rotational speed of mutation, interference of speed on the diseal model.
