The purpose of this thesis is to study and develop a novel ship main engine remote control simulation system. Firstly, a quasi steady simulation model for large marine propulsion plant is established. The complex model consists of the large low speed two-stroke diesel engine, shaft, fixed pitch propeller and ship hull dynamics. The main engine MAN B&W 10L90MC equips on large scale container ship, which is adopted as the control object in the thesis. In addition, by employing AutoChief C20 main engine remote control system as the research object, the mathematical model of the system is established, including the main engine telegraph system, the electronic governor system and safety system etc, in accordance with the modular modeling. What's more, a full mission new ship diesel main propulsion plant remote simulation system including the bridge, ECR and local is developed under the Microsoft Visual C++6.0 environment by utilizing CAN bus and touch screen physical equipments, as well as the view classes switching and database management techniques. Finally, the generalized minimum variance control based on BP neural network is introduced into the ship diesel engine speed control system coded by MATLAB with simulation results presented.The results indicate that there are high reliabilities with the calculated data from the established mathematical model of ship propulsion plant. The system developed by this study can simulate a lot of operations of the ship main propulsion plant and realize all kinds of functions of AutoChief C20 remote control system such as the slow turning, start ahead and astern, reversing, the switch of control position, speed control, load limit, safety system, the setting and modifying of parameters etc. Therefore, it achieves high integration and satisfactory visualization. Compared with the conventional PID controller, the generalized minimum variance control algorithm based on BP neural network can effectively improve the turbocharger surge caused by the oversized rotation speed oscillations under the condition of rough sea.The full-function simulation system of the new type of main propulsion control system can be adopted not only as the platform of intelligent algorithm for ship diesel main engine, but also as one part of the new type of marine power plant simulator. It fa- cilitates the investigation of the advanced control algorithms for the ship main propulsion system and crew training under laboratory conditions.
