With the improvement of CAD theory and application, the design concept and method of traditional two-dimensional (2D) CAD has gradually been replaced by three-dimensional (3D) CAD. In order to adapt the rapid change of market and have business advantages in the fierce competition, ever-increasing demands for design efficiency of 3D CAD system would come into being in practice. Based on the structural characteristics of large industrial building, a 3D hierarchically parametric design approach and the collaborative modeling strategy for hierarchically parametric model are proposed to address the problem of low efficiency which could be encountered by traditional design methods in the design process. The specific research is introduced as follows.(1) Based on the principle of"Divide and Conquer", the hierarchically parametric design method is established. The method constructs a hierarchically parametric model consisting of interrelated sub-models, to represent the large industrial building which can be decomposed into various sub-structures according to material, function, or location. With a profound analysis of the history-based parametric feature modeling method, a new change propagation mechanism and rebuilding strategy is developed to support rapid design and modification.(2) With an analysis of the basic characteristics of hierarchically parametric model, the collaborative modeling technology of hierarchically parametric model is presented. First of all, the theories of foundation about Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and collaborative design are introduced. Next, according to working mechanism of 3D distributed collaborative modeling environment, the framework of collaborative modeling for hierarchically parametric model is implemented and the specific concurrent conflict is analyzed, as well as the principle of concurrency control.(3) The proposed method has been implemented in a commercial 3D CAD system called InteRDS, and the application results show that the design efficiency of this approach can meet the needs well in practice.
