Innovative design is quite significant in the process of the development of modern industry. It is required in the design and development process of all kinds of product. The quality and efficiency of innovative have to meet the requirement in order to take a place in business. As we know, the update rate of product is very fast. Spending much time to design and develop a product is unreasonable. However, utilizing RE(Reverse Engineering) technology to obtain the digital information of the product to achieve a deformation design or innovative design is a good way to reduce the time of product development.Reverse modeling is an important technology aspect of RE. In the dissertation, two main means of reverse modeling, parametric modeling and non-parametric modeling, are introduced and analyzed fully. Parametric modeling is a way to modeling the CAD model by extracting the features in CAD software. The parameter can be adjusted for realizing the redesign of the model. Non-parametric is different with parametric modeling. It is a way to build the CAD model by fitting the surfaces which are separated to several areas by the point cloud data. Non-parametric modeling is quite automatic in RE software and it is simple and fast to build a model. It is suitable for the free-form surface product. However, the disadvantage of non-parametric modeling is that the parameter cannot be adjusted in CAD software. Therefore, deformation modeling technology is used to redesign the model in order to achieve product innovative design.In the dissertation, the characteristic of reverse modeling and deformation modeling technology are introduced and analyzed detailedly. Then, the technical route of combining non-parametric modeling and deformation modeling technology is proposed. Furthermore, the two deformation tools ThinkDesign GSM and Freeform system are analyzed. And the difference of these two tool are compared in the aspects of global deformation, local deformation, modeling flexibility and CAD compatibility. GSM can be more accurate in global deformation, therefore the model will be globally deformed by GSM. And Freeform system is more flexible in local deformation, therefore the model will be locally deformed by Freeform system. After redesigning the CAD model, it will be manufactured by the rapid prototyping system.By utilizing rapid prototyping to test and evaluate the model, which prove that the technical route is a effective and practical way to realize product innovative design. It also could be effective in reducing time of product development.
