A high frame rate CMOS camera with the function of window readout is designed in this paper, and the corresponding hardware and software designing method is also provided here. In free space laser communication systems, CMOS camera is responsible for accepting the beacon laser after free-space attenuation. The frame rate can be increased considerably by mode of ROI(region-of-interest) in order to meet the requirements of both coarse tracking and fine tracking servo bandwidth.Design of CMOS camera is divided into three parts:Optical Imaging Unit, selecting Cypress's LUPA-300 CMOS image sensor as CMOS image sensor to acquire the beacon laser and realize digital image data output;Camera Driving Timing and Control Unit, by using of CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device) to achieve the initialization of CMOS camera, and by using of the SPI bus to design the register of the LUPA-300 and driving timing; Data Transmission Unit, by using of high-speed Camera link interface to transform the digital image signal TTL into LVDS(Low Voltage Differential Signal) and realize high-speed transmission of digital image signal. It has been proved by experiment that the CMOS camera system is capable of meeting the requirements of both coarse tracking and fine tracking servo bandwidth, when the coarse tracking frame rate can reach 247 fps and the fine tracking frame rate can be more than 3,000 fps.
