In the recent years, as its data communications ability to provide users with convenient,high-speed wireless data access and Internet Services, wireless local area network (WLAN)has obtained a wide range of applications. The technology of WLAN matures and thecomplementary nature in access speed and adaptability to the environment with the 3G networksmakes the applications in wireless local area network extension from simple wired network tomore application areas and become one of indispensable means of high-speed wireless dataaccess in indoor micro cell, especially in the hot spots.In addition, with the development of individual communications, wireless personal areanetwork (WPAN) has become the new hot of attention by the public. At present the maintechnologies in WPAN are ZigBee, Bluetooth and so on. ZigBee is a new, short-range, lowpower, low-rate wireless access technology, mainly used for short-distance wirelesscommunication in the wireless personal area network.Therefore, interoperability between various wireless networks become necessary. In orderto realize the sharing of information resources and the merits of the different networkscomplement, network convergence is the orientation of network development andcommunications technology and communications standards development in the future. Gatewaybetween ZigBee network and Wi-Fi network was designed and implemented, which has the realreference value.This thesis introduces the features of ZigBee and Wi-Fi, two typical short-range wirelesscommunications technology. Based on the study of the typical integration of GPRS and WLANin the existing integration of heterogeneous networks, the project proposes a scheme ofheterogeneous networks convergence between ZigBee network and Wi-Fi network based onembedded gateway and develops the software and hardware on the embedded Linux platform.Finally, Crossbow's wireless sensor network based on mesh and ZCOM's wireless AP devices isused to builed WPAN and WLAN. Experiment system based on heterogeneous networksconvergence of ZigBee wireless sensor network and Wi-Fi network is constructed and dataexchange between ZigBee wireless sensor network and Wi-Fi network on the experimentalplatform. Furthermore the technology-related expansion of the existing experimental platform isproposed, such as how to avoid signal interference existing in the ZigBee network and Wi-Finetwork common working in the 2.4GHz band.
