In 2008, the China Mobile Ltd underwent another round of corporate reconstruction to acquire the operating eligibility for both the broadband network and land-line telephone network. In 2009, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued operation licences to the 3 network operators. Under this background, the China Mobile Ltd is realizing the transformation from mobile network operator to comprehensive service provider whose service covers wireless/wired voice communication and wireless/wired broadband network. The China Mobile Ltd entered into an era of full-scale operation.In recent years, the increasing rate of IP data service surpassed the conventional voice communication service at a very large amount. The main characteristics of this service are strong suddenness, flexibility of service interchange and high requirement for reliability and security which imposed challenge on the old-generation bearing network. Hence, the intercity transmission network requires broader broadband and more effective transmission technology to support its development. Under the trend of all mobile IP-lization, the introduction and application of PTN technology is becoming a have-to-stay stage of intercity transmission network evolvement.This article first discussed the characteristics and application scope of several mainstream transmission technologies including SDH/MSTP, xPON, WDM, PTN and OTN. Further discussion and detailed analysis was done on PTN's technical highlights and essential techniques. Illustration of the functions of different essential techniques inside PTN structure was also done. Moreover, taking two dominating companys'PTN series products as examples, this article compared the application scenarios, ability to cross, business slot position, ability to access and so on.Through the analysis, we could see the PTN technology mainly focused on how to solve the transmission problem on access layer and core layer of the network. The pivot point in smoothing the network transition was the proper insertion of PTN technology when facing such a mature and massive MSTP network and the wide existance of Metropolitan-Area WDM platform. This article analyzed the positioning and the relationship with other networks of PTN technology. The corresponding network model,core planning,network protection,clock synchronization,QoS strategy and so on was achieved.Lastly, this topic chose PTN network construction project of Z Mobile as an application case. By analyzing the local existing resource and faced challenge, the PTN network construction principles, modes and strategic analysis as well as the co-construction idea of both SDH and PTN network were proposed. By investigating the local IP-lization evolvement strategy, guidance could be provided for later PTN network design and construction.
