The Application And Implementation Of BRAS Network Management System In Beijing Unicom

Broadband remote access server (BRAS) is the important backbone device.It is the bridge between the backbone and access layer.A broadband remote access server (BRAS, B-RAS or BBRAS) routes traffic to and from broadband remote access devices such as digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM) on an Internet service provider's (ISP) network.The BRAS sits at the core of an ISP's network, and aggregates user sessions from the access network. It is at the BRAS that an ISP can inject policy management and IP Quality of Service (QoS).The specific tasks include:Aggregates the circuits from one or more link access devices such as DSLAMsProvides layer 2 connectivity through either transparent bridging or PPP sessions over Ethernet or ATM sessionsEnforces quality of service (QoS) policiesProvides layer 3 connectivity and routes IP traffic through an Internet service provider's backbone network to the Internet.Before integrated BRAS-NMS, several NMS from different vendors were used. No matter network or business management were really a challenge.In march 2004, Beijing Unicom start to introduce integrated NMS, a fully customised system to meet the network and busines requirements. Based on the Beijing unicom broadband network and BRAS network management present situation, has analyzed the Beijing unicom BRAS and related switch management requirements, put forward the construction of BRAS comprehensive network management system solutions. Through test and implementation of integrated NMS BRAS-uplines operation network management system, realize the entire network (city, suburbs) contains additional 7750 SR7 equipment types of 6 kinds of BRAS equipment, sub-accounts BRAS (original in BRAS equipment and the newly added 6509 equipment) 9 kinds of access convergence switches and six special line special network convergence switch equipment fault monitoring, topology and resources manifestations, security supervision, graphics and tables statistics, and other functions, improve the Beijing unicom network operation and maintenance level of various management functions.Later, vision was extended to Business Intelligence(BI) and Human resources.Integrated BRAS-NMS should not be thought only as a technology-oriented system.It also have deep impacts to many parts of company operation management.
