The Study Of Correlation Between Nurses's Sense Of Coherence, Personality Traits And Nurses' Burnout

Objective: This paper reports the level of nurses'job burnout and the condition of sense of coherence in the city of Suzhou; and findings of the relationship among nurses'sense of coherence, personality traits and burnout. And try to explore factors of nurses'sense of coherence and burnout, with the purpose of forming an effective way to ease work strain and maintaining nurse's physical and mental health.Methods: 494 nurses in general hospitals and community hospitals of Suzhou attended our investigation from June 2010 to October by stratified randomized cluster sample method. The Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI), Sense of Coherence Scale(SOC-13), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and Individual Information Sheet were used in our investigation. The entire figure was input into computer by Epidata3.1. Descriptive statistics analysis, T-test, Variance analysis, Pearson correlation analysis and Multivariate Stepwise Regression analysis were performed by SPSS16.0 statistic software.Results: 1. Burnout level was higher than the M and Hangzhou norms. The t-test showed our outcomes were significant different between the average score of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment from that two norms(P<0.01). 2. The mean score of sense of coherence of surveyed nurses was in the middle (57.35±11.51), and position, hospital level, extraversion, mentation, neuroticism were independent factors related to sense of coherence. 3. By correlation analysis, we testified that sense of coherence had significant relationship with burnout(P<0.01), the higher their sense of coherence is, the lower their burnout level is; Burnout had significant relationship with extraversion, mentation, neuroticism(P<0.01); Sense of coherence had significant relationship with extraversion, mentation, neuroticism(P<0.01), except that there was no significant relationship with comprehensibility and extraversion. 4. Regression analysis indicated that meaning, manageability, comprehensibility, neuroticism, hospital level and age were important predictors for emotional exhaustion; comprehensibility, meaning, mentation, neuroticism, hospital level and years of working were important predictors for depersonalization; meaning, extraversion, mentation, neuroticism, position and hospital level were important predictors for diminished personal accomplishment.Conclusions: 1. The score of nurses'emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were in the middle level, and the score of diminished personal accomplishment was in the high level; The mean score of sense of coherence of surveyed nurses was in the middle. 2. Nurses'sense of coherence, personality traits and burnout affected each other significantly. 3. Sense of coherence played a positive role in reducing nurses'burnout.
