The development of mobile communication is an unceasing evolution process. With the invention of frequency modulation, the mobile phone became possible in 1930s. The first generation (1G) mobile communication systems are analog, which are capacitiy-limited and are easily intercepted. Compared to the first generation mobile communication systems, the system capacities, voice quality and security are improved in the second generation (2G) mobile communication systems. Although the 2G systems are digital, the bandwidths of 2G systems are limited. Thus, it can not meet the user demand for video, multimedia and data service. For that, the third generation (3G) mobile communication systems are come into being by the market demand and technology-driven. With leading-edge technology and broad application ability, the 3G systems are welcome by the users. Since the 3G network is the integration of the Internet and the wireless network, the aim, which the user can access the required service in any time and at any place, can be truly realized. In China, the 3G licenses has been issued and the operators are actively preparing for the future competition. To always maintain the technological leadership, the China Unicom Corp., as an operator with a huge GSM mobile network, should immediately consider these issues, e.g., how to face the future and how to build a robust 3G network.Since the legacy 2G network resources can be fully utilized by WCDMA, the WCDMA is an idea technique for the smooth migration of GSM to 3G networks. By exploiting the WCDMA technology, a communication system with low cost and high-quality can be set up. Therefore, the WCDMA technology is the first choice of China Unicom. In this thesis, the WCDMA wireless network planning is studied. We firstly present the basic concepts, main parameters, wireless network structure and network planning ideas of WCDMA. Then, the key technologies and their features of WCDMA are elaborated. Subsequently, we describe the planning procedure, network deployment scheme in detail. Where, the scheme mainly emphasize on the smooth evolution for the construction of the WCDMA network. Based on the describled principles, the network planning scheme of WCDMA for Meishan Unicom Corp. is presented. According to the GSM network in operation for Meishan, we exploit the computer-aided design for the network planning scheme of WCDMA. We describe the network optimization procedure of WCDMA in detail. Finally, the summary and the discussion for future research work are given, respectively.
