The development of mobile communication is an unceasing evolution process, In 1930s, with the invention of frequency modulation, the mobile phone then became possible. The 1st generation (1G) mobile communication systems are analog, the system capacities are limited and they are easily intercepted. The 2nd generation (2G) systems are digital. The system capacities are increased and they provide good voice quality and security. However, the bandwidth is limited and cannot meet the user demand for video. multimedia and data service. Thus, the market demand and technology driven make its introduction of the third generation (3G) mobile communication systems. 3G is in user's favour by its leading technical superiority and the broad application ability. The 3G network is the convergence of Internet and the wireless network. It can truly realize the aim that the user can access the required service in any time and any place . In China, the 3G licenses will be issued soon. The operators are actively preparing for the future competition. The China Mobile Corp., as an operator with a huge GSM mobile network, should consider the issues now on how to face the future, and how to build a robust 3G network, in order to keep the eterna leadership in terms of technology. WCDMA is the idea technique for GSM networks to migrate to 3G network smoothly. Fully utilizing of the legacy 2G network resources and constructing a low cost, high-quality mobile network is the first choice of China Mobile. This thesis studies the WCDMA wireless network planning. Firstly we introduce the basic concepts, main parameters and wireless network structure of WCDMA, and present the WCDMA network planning ideas. After a detailed explanation of the technical features and the key technologies of the WCDMA network, then we describe the planning procedure , network deployment scheme in detail. The exposition emphasize on the smooth evolution for the WCDMA network construction. In terms of the above principles, we present the first phase WCDMA network planning scheme by computer software aided design for Shuozhou Mobile Corp. based on the GSM network in operation now in Shuozhou. Finally, we give the summary and discuss the trend for future research work.
