Ad hoc network (MANET) is a dynamic wireless packet networks. With the development of wireless communication technology, the application area of MANET began expanding, the kinds of applications began diverseing, and the tasks undertaken in such networks began increasing largely. Therefore, how to manage the network successfully, how to provide QoS assurance for some of the network applications, and how to maintain the network performance efficiently have become the urgent tasks in MANET.Compared to the traditional network, the management in MANET has its own requirements. MANET is a distribution network, and therefore the centralized management structure is not suitable for MANET. Besides since the resource-constrained feature, the network management system should be efficient and lightweight, and the overhead of management should be as little as possible.As a new technology, the policy-based network management is quite different from traditional network management, which divided the management functions into five separate modules. Each module would send its own information to a central station isolately, and leave network problems to the administrator. However, the policy-based network management established a feedback loop among all of the five modules, it could change the network behavior and realize the intelligent management by the feedback information and the corresponding policy rules during the network operating time.By researching and analyzing the existing QoS management structures and network management technologies, the paper proposed and designed an Ad hoc network QoS management framework, which was based on DiffServ model and policy-based network management technology. The DiffServ model, which could provide the different levels of service to different kinds of traffics, was the foundation to provide the QoS guarantees; it also provided the theoretical support for formulating and implementing QoS rules. Meanwhile, the policy-based network management technology provided the technical support for dynamic configuration and automatic ?management. We formulated the QoS rules according to RFC standards, and stored them in the OpenLDAP directory database. Besides, we used the libpcap under Linux environment to collect information and designed all of the interfaces between the modules in the proposed framework. Finally, we tested the management system in a real environment, and the results showed that the proposed QoS management system for Ad hoc network can provide QoS management for the application traffics. And it also achieved the automatic management for Ad hoc networks.
