Policy-Based Network Management System Design And Implementation

This paper defines the traditional network management systems as the network management systems which undertake the tasks of management of all kinds of networks. Traditional network management approach is based on the simple network management protocol SNMP, logically divided into the following four sections: possession agent, network management workstations, network management protocol and network management information, the main functions including configuration management, fault management, performance management, and security management and accounting management. With the development of network technology, the complexity of the network structure and the expansion of the network application fields expand, the traditional network management technology has gradually revealed its deficiencies and shortcomings, thus is facing tremendous and unprecedented challenges.Policy-based management has become a promising solution for managing enterprise-wide networks and distributed systems. These are typically large-scale systems which require management solutions that are both self-adapting and that dynamically change the behaviors of the managed system. The main motivation for the recent interest in policy-based services, networks and security systems is to support dynamic adaptability of behaviors by changing policy without recoding or stopping the system. This implies that it should be possible to dynamically update the policy rules interpreted by distributed entities to modify their behaviors.Based on the background of technology and application, this paper proposes a network management reference model which combines the policy management with the traditional network management, designed and realizes a policy-based network management system, and finally analyses the performance of the system model. Specifically, this paper includes the following contents:(1) This paper analyses of the traditional network management technology and its realization principle, related agreements. Points out the existing problems and the developing direction of the traditional network management.(2) After penetrating into the basic concept of policy, policy-based network management architecture established by IETF and the related agreement, The paper proposes a new policy-based network management model.(3) On the basis of basic function of the tradition network management, policy-based network management theory, and the current network software and hardware platform, This paper proposes a policy-based network management system model, and analyses in detail the architecture and functional modules of the system model.(4) According to the campus network in our school, and the policy-based network management system model mentioned above this paper, theoretically analyses the realization of this system model, and summarizes some concrete questions which exists in the realization of the system model.
