With the rapid growth of the broadband network, GPON which is one important technology of the access network has attracted extensive attention for its'high bandwidth,high efficiency and full-service supported ability.Currently,the voice of the market to deploy GPON in great force is increasing.At the same time,the industry has begun to study the next generation GPON.Therefore,discussing GPON technology is significant.Based on the previous research of the discussion group,the physical layer and some pivotal modules of the GPON optical network terminal's transmission convergence layer have been studied according to the latest G.984 series of the International Telecommunications Union.Firstly,the development status of GPON in the world and the main differences between the two editions have been introduced. Then starting with the total design plan, the physical layer,algorithms of the frame synchronization module,the scrambler/descrambler mudule, the Forward Error Correction coder module and the Forward Error Correction decoder module of the GPON TC layer have been discussed in detail.After that,the design principles of the syndome computation module,the modified Enclid algorithm module,the Chien search module and the Forney algorithm module which makes up the FEC decoder module have been expounded.When writing the corresponding programms,some new means to realize the above modules have been proposed and the idea how they can evolve to 10 Gbps has been explained.Finally,the test programms to validate the design have been written as the protocol required and the synthesis results at the register transfer level have been presented.
