Optical transmission is getting more important in the access network due to the increasing demand for high-quality audio, high-bandwidth, IPTV, and figures. The feasible transport solutions for the optical access are Passive Optical Network (PON). Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) is the most feasible one in the PON technology. This paper demonstrates part of the design work of multimedia terminal—Optical Network Terminal.Firstly, the structure of both GPON optical access network system and high speed EPON is introduced, the key techniques, and the current development of GPON is analyzed. Secondly, the structure of the physical layer of the GPON system is introduced, a high-speed transmission optical module device is designed, and the emulational results of the chosen devices are analyzed.Thirdly, the GEM encapsulation techniques of ONT's transmission convergence layer specifically, the arithmetic and feasibility of the upstream frame, and the dynamic distribution techniques are analyzed and its arithmetic in practice. Finally, the designing requirement of GPON core chip and the eligible mainstream chip are introduced. The communication module applied in high-speed transmission and the disturbance problems are related. A whole design scheme of GOPN physical layer and TC layer are summarized.
