Optical transmission is getting more popular in the access network due to the increasing demand for bandwidth. The most advertised transport solution for the optical access are Passive Optical Network(PON).Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network(GPON) is the most advertised one in the PON technology. This paper is a studing of GPON system's multimedia terminal—Optical Network Terminal.The content of this paper is as follows:Firstly, this paper discusses about the GPON development actuality, comparing of different PON, and advantages of GPON. Then, according to the newest GPON G.984 recommendation, it analyses the network structure and demands of GPON system.Secondly, this paper analyses the key functions of ONT in the GPON system and interface of optical network terminal based fiber to home.Combined with the network layered structure and each layer's functions of ONT, it puts forward layered designing scheme of ONT. Then, modularized designing method of the GTC layer and its scheme are given on the basis of GTC layer functions, according to this, the paper analyses the work theory of key modules of this layer. Services multiplexing technique of the upstream direction is discussed.Then,study the high layer of ONT.Thirdly, according to the GPON open recommendation and test progress,the paper analyes the newest study development of GPON and its market application,finally makes the prospect of GPON.
