Coke is one of the essential raw materials and fuel in metallurgy industry, mechanism, chemical plant, etc. The coking process consists of many processes, such as the coal blending process, the heating combustion process, the gas collecting process and the pushing coking process. Real-time centralized monitoring of different processes, and effectively integration and uniform management of product information lay the foundation for realizing optimization and control of the coking process. Furthermore, that is very meaningful to ensure stable runs of coke oven, improvement of quality and quantity as well as reduction of energy and pollution. The design and implementation of centralized monitoring system for the coking process are proposed in this paper, including the following aspects:(1) Design of the system architectureThe system consists of four modules, which are data collection module, product process monitoring module, data management module and the system security management module. The product process monitoring module is to show the real-time figures of production process. The data management module is involved with the management of the history data in Oracle database. The security management module implements the operations of user management, authority setting, safe log out, etc.(2) Real-time data collection of the product processBased on OPC server, real-time data collection of coking production and automatic backup are achieved. Moreover, historical data are automatically stored and duplicated by building Oracle database server. Then the problem of process data automatic transferring among different databases is solved, which ensures the data is transferred real-time and reliably.(3) Implemation of the application software The electric link and hardware configuration of the gas collecting DCS subsystem, the combustion control PLC subsystem and coal blending optimal PLC subsystem are realized. Under the environment of Visual C++ and configuration software WinCC, the application software of real-time centralized monitoring system based on C/S architecture is developed using the techniques of OPC, ADO and COM. It implements the functions of real-time centralized monitoring of the coking production process, alarming and acknowledgement under abnormal working conditions, displaying of real-time or historical trend, table management of production data, etc. In addition, the application software realizes a direct and clear display of production state of the whole coking process.The system was successfully applied to the coking plant of an iron and steel company in 2008. The results of actual runs show that the system meets the practical production requirements and provides real-time information for operators. Meanwhile, it ensures safe production of the coking process and reasonable arrangement of the production plan.
