With the rapid development of the information technology, all colleges or universities have started the "Digital Campus" program, with the purpose of increasing the work efficiency and better serving the teaching and scientific research. All school branches have begun to use different types of management information systems, of which the Hospital Information System (HIS) is one important part. After the promulgation of the medical care policy for university students, school leaders have attached great importance to the management of medical process. By analyzing and integrating large amounts of historical data accumulated from medical affairs, information technology (IT) people are able to find some useful information for decision-making. Based on this information, the long-term medical service rules and regulations can be made and the medical management can be optimized. What the existing HISs does is only collecting and collating data so they can only be used for searching and calculating. In order to improve the utility, rationality, and effectiveness of the analysis and decision-making, IT people should extract the useful data from the affairs processing environment, reorganize the data according to the procession requirements of the decision-making support system, and create an independent analysis and processing environment. The emergence of data warehouse technology meets the need of the creation of such an analysis and processing environment. The data warehouse is for storing and organizing data. Having created a data warehouse for the school hospital, IT people can obtain useful information for decision-making by the use of data mining technology, which is an unavoidable trend of the further development of the school HIS.This paper puts forward a scenario of University Hospital Data Warehouse System (UHDWS). This scenario uses Microsoft SQL Server 2000 data warehouse technology to create a data warehouse, and uses On-line Transaction Processing (OLAP) to analyze the medical affairs data. This paper, first, goes deep into the concepts and development methods of data warehouse and the OLAP technology, and analyzes the Microsoft SQL Server2000 data warehouse frame. Second, it discusses in detail about the practical problems and needs of colleges and universities when they are making decisions concerning medical issues, and gives the flow and description of the needs. Then the subjects are taken from the existing database and established, and design the star-shaped pattern corresponding to all the subjects. In this way the overall model of the school hospital's data warehouse is built. The clearance, conversion, and loading of data is completed in a dynamic script way. With the use of Microsoft SQL Server2000 Analysis Services, the Multidimensional Data Set corresponding to data warehouse is created. By calling PivotTable, analysis results are presented. With the front-end use of DELLPHI, the interactive interface is designed so that users can browse the analysis results, which assists the decision-making.The research result of this paper has been put into practice in the school hospital of Shanghai Sanda Institute. The data warehouse based on the school hospital's medical management system provides OLAP with fast searching, data analysis and mining, and data pictorial display, with the ultimate aim that the historical data accumulated in the existing HIS can play an important role in supporting leaders when they are making decisions. This paper can be used for reference by the universities of the same level for the better management of the school hospitals' medical care systems.
