As a new technology, RPR (Resilient Packet Ring) and MPLS (Multi-Propocol Label Switching) are two leader of technology of WAN transmission, they bring a revolution to the technology of WAN construction and provide user with high quality service. RPR base on IEEE802.17 draft, it takes advantage of SDH, ATM and Ethernet, but not the disadvantage. Generally, RPR is to compete with SDH or MSTP, but can work together with them. As it goes, it can bring resolution to bandwith reused, fairness, business classificaion, Cos and user isolation.In this thesis, first introduce the development of three generations of MSTP, current situation of RPR technology and application in WAN transmission. Then analyze the IEEE802.17 draft, include the structure of RPR MAC, format of several important frames, topology discovery, protection switching and fairness algorithm. Then discuss the main structure of MSTP device with RPR function embeded RSEB, also the module of software and topology and protection module of RPR protocol. Finally design how to test the function of RPR and verify the result.My main job of Writting this thesis as belowed: make a research and learning of RPR protocol, design the structure of RPR board and software module, implementation one part of RPR function. Finally build a proposal of RPR fucntion testing and bring verification.
